Selecting the Right Major

The best advice I have given over the years that has worked every time is to conduct the following exercise.  Let me be clear that this exercise can help an incoming freshman choose a major, or courses he/she can take until they decide what college degree program they will major in.  This exercise may not be for you if you already know what you are going to major in.  I suggest you do the exercise just to see if your current major of choice lines up with what you love to do and are really good at doing!

Create & Compare the following lists:

  • 4 things I love to do!
  • 4 things I’m very good at.
  • 4 careers that heavily incorporate these things.
  • 4 degrees that I need to pursue to prepare me for those careers.
  • Identify & select the classes that all those majors share in common.

This system allows you to do the following:

  • Take a full load of classes for at least 2 years without declaring a major,
  • Move towards several degrees at the same time,
  • Provide ample time to carefully choose your major,
  • Take only necessary classes that count towards your degree and eliminate taking unnecessary classes.
